Exposure
Umbrella bamboo prefers partial shade to full shade. It tolerates direct sun but prefers protection from the most intense rays in summer, particularly in warm regions. A north or north-east facing position is ideal to keep its foliage green and limit desiccation.
Watering
Keep the soil moist but well-drained, especially during the growing season (April to September). Water regularly in case of drought, as bamboos in pots or poor soil fear drying out. In winter, reduce watering but don't let the soil dry out completely.
Soil and planting
Choose fertile, humus-rich soil that is well-structured. Adding compost or potting mix at planting promotes rooting. Fargesia rufa tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soils. A thick mulch layer helps retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
