Care
Watering
Water regularly during the active growing period (spring-summer), keeping the substrate moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter and during the dormant period. Use soft water, preferably not lime-rich, at room temperature.
Light exposure
Place the plant in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct exposure to scorching sun rays that could damage the foliage. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light will slow down flowering.
Substrate and drainage
Use a porous, well-draining orchid-specific mix composed of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Repot every 2 to 3 years after flowering.
Fertilizing
Apply diluted liquid fertilizer every 15 days during the growing period (spring-summer). Use a balanced fertilizer or one slightly high in phosphorus to promote flowering. Stop fertilizing in winter.
Pruning and maintenance
Remove faded flowers and dried flower stems by cutting above a node. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves. No drastic pruning is necessary; let the plant develop naturally.
Pests and diseases
Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids which are attracted to orchids. Stagnant excess humidity promotes fungal rot. Ventilate regularly and check drainage; if infection occurs, isolate the plant and treat with mild soap or an appropriate fungicide.
Did you know?
Eulophia maculata is a remarkable terrestrial African orchid known for its flowers with distinctive spots, which earned it the name 'maculata' (spotted). Though less famous than its exotic epiphytic cousins, it plays an important ecological role in West Africa as a plant of humid savannas and wooded areas, attracting specialized pollinators.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
