Care
Watering and humidity
Broad-leaved cottongrass demands constantly moist to wet soil. In its natural habitat, it thrives in peat bogs or along waterbanks. Keep the soil saturated or nearly flooded during the growing season. Reduced watering in winter is acceptable as long as the soil stays cool.
Light exposure
This plant appreciates full sun to partial shade. It tolerates well-lit, moist environments. Positioning in a brightly lit marshy area promotes vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
Soil preparation and nature
Choose acidic, organic-rich soil (peat, sphagnum) that is very moist. Drainage is not a concern; in fact, avoid overly dry soils. Rooting in shallow water or reconstructed peat bog works perfectly.
Nutrition and feeding
This species from naturally poor habitats requires no regular fertilizer. An annual application of peaty compost or white peat in spring is enough to maintain soil fertility. Avoid overly rich chemical fertilizers that would alter its ecological profile.
Pruning and cleanup
Little pruning is needed. Remove dry or damaged foliage in late winter to make room for new growth. Faded flower spikes can be left in place as they retain ornamental value before naturally disintegrating.
Health and prevention
Very disease-resistant under appropriate conditions. Prolonged drought stress may weaken the plant, but no major specific diseases are reported. Simply maintain constant moisture to avoid any water stress.
Did you know?
The white fluffy spikes of cottongrass contain thousands of silky hairs that once filled pillows, blankets, and even lamp wicks in northern regions. Today, in certain peat bogs of Ireland and Scandinavia, these plants transform the spring landscape into a vast shimmering white field—a spectacular sight that has inspired countless Celtic legends.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
