Expert tips
The key tip
Portuguese Heath grows on very well-drained, acidic soil, even poor soil. Light regular watering during growth (May-September), very little in winter.
The common mistake
Watering it in winter or growing it in chalky/wet soil: it gradually declines and rots.
The pro's trick
Group 3-5 plants close together (40cm centre to centre): the mass effect of white-pink flowers from October to December replaces a sparse, poorly flowering isolated plant.
Seasonal watch
September-October: heavy rain before flowering can rot the buds if soil isn't perfectly drained.
Care
Light exposure
Place your Portuguese Heath in full sun to encourage abundant flowering and a compact shape. It tolerates partially shaded spots but will flower less generously. Avoid areas exposed to cold, drying winds, particularly in winter.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, especially during the growing and flowering period. Water regularly in summer and autumn. Reduce watering in winter without letting the substrate dry out completely. Rainwater is preferable to hard water.
Soil and substrate
This heath requires acidic soil with a pH below 7. Use heather compost or amend your soil with peat or ericaceous soil. Good drainage is essential to prevent root suffocation and rot.
Pruning and maintenance
Prune lightly after flowering (January-February) to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching. Remove dead or damaged branches. Avoid severe pruning, which could weaken the plant.
Fertilizing
Apply diluted fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in spring and early summer. Limit nitrogen applications to avoid promoting foliage at the expense of flowering. Moderate feeding is sufficient for this undemanding plant.
Diseases and pests
Portuguese Heath dislikes excess moisture and waterlogged soils, which can cause root rot. Watch for spider mites in dry or hot climates. Good air circulation and optimal drainage prevent most problems.
Did you know?
Portuguese Heath conquered European gardens in the eighteenth century thanks to its generous winter flowering. It became emblematic of Mediterranean and Lusitanian winter gardens, where it blooms precisely when most other plants are dormant. Its genus Erica includes more than 860 species worldwide, concentrated mainly in South Africa.
Where to buy it
Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
