Care
Regular watering
Branched horsetail appreciates constantly moist, even slightly wet soils. Water generously during the growing season (spring-summer) and maintain moderate moisture in autumn-winter. Avoid root suffocation in summer though: well-drained soil is preferable to constantly waterlogged substrate.
Light exposure
Install branched horsetail in full sun for vigorous growth, or in partial shade if summers are very hot. This plant tolerates partially shaded exposures well. Choose a location sheltered from strong winds that could damage its fine stems.
Soil preparation and amendment
Prepare a mixture rich in organic matter: quality potting soil, well-decomposed compost, and add sand or gravel to ensure drainage. Horsetail adapts to many pH levels but prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Improve the substrate with an addition of organic matter each spring.
Pruning and cleaning
Branched horsetail requires only light cleaning of dead or heavily damaged stems in early spring. Its stems renew naturally each season. You can cut the plant back to ground level in late winter to rejuvenate old clumps and encourage nice branching.
Moderate fertilizing
Apply a balanced, diluted fertilizer in spring when vegetation starts. Since horsetail is a hardy and undemanding plant, a single application is usually sufficient. A mulch rich in organic matter renewed each year provides the necessary nutrients.
Problem prevention
Branched horsetail is very rarely subject to diseases or pests. In case of prolonged excess moisture, watch for mold or root rot: improve drainage in that case. Its fine stems remain unattractive to common pests.
Did you know?
Branched horsetail belongs to an ancient family of vascular plants that dominated the Earth 300 million years ago. Its ancestors, the calamites, could reach 20 meters in height and made up the forests of the Carboniferous period. Today, these "living fossils" retain exactly the same spore-based reproduction method, unchanged since prehistoric times.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
