Care
Watering
Water regularly during the growth period, keeping the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter, a period of relative dormancy. Preferably use rainwater or filtered water at room temperature. Allow pots to drain well to prevent root rot.
Exposure and light
Place the orchid near a bright window, without direct exposure to summer's burning sun. Indirect and abundant light is ideal for ensuring beautiful blooms. In winter, increase light slightly. Avoid overly dark locations, which compromise flowering.
Substrate and repotting
Use a substrate specific to epiphytic orchids, composed of pine bark, sphagnum moss and charcoal, to ensure excellent aeration and optimal drainage. Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably after flowering. Be careful to preserve the delicacy of the roots during repotting.
Pruning and cleaning
Remove faded flowers and dried flower stems after blooming, cutting just above the first healthy node. Regularly clean the leaves with a damp cloth to promote good photosynthesis. No drastic pruning is necessary: respect the plant's natural structure.
Fertilizing
Apply diluted orchid-specific fertilizer once a month during the active growing period, from spring to early autumn. Reduce or eliminate applications in winter. Strictly follow the recommended dosages to avoid a harmful accumulation of salts on the roots.
Pest and disease prevention
Watch for the appearance of spider mites and mealybugs, particularly in dry air. Maintain good hygiene and sufficient ambient humidity (50 to 60%) to prevent infestations. If problems occur, isolate the plant and intervene quickly with gentle methods before considering chemical treatment.
Did you know?
Encyclia stellata owes its name to its characteristic star-shaped flowers, which bloom in dense clusters. Like many epiphytic orchids from the tropical forests of Central America, it naturally developed on trees, drawing its resources from the air and surrounding humidity, making it a particularly fascinating orchid for discerning collectors.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
