Care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, without waterlogging. Water once or twice a week depending on climate conditions. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy.
Exposure
Male fern prefers partial shade or full shade. It tolerates full sun poorly, especially afternoon sun, which dries out its foliage. A location under tree cover or on the north side of a house is ideal.
Pruning and cleaning
In late winter or early spring, before growth resumes, remove dead or damaged fronds at soil level. Regularly clean fallen leaves to prevent moisture buildup.
Fertilizer
A moderate application of organic fertilizer (well-decomposed compost) in spring is sufficient. Avoid concentrated chemical fertilizers that can burn young fronds. An established fern is not very demanding.
Soil and substrate
Choose a substrate rich in organic matter, well-drained and slightly acidic (pH 5.5 to 7). A mixture of potting soil, compost and shredded bark works perfectly in pots as well as in the garden.
Diseases and pests
Male fern is generally robust. Watch for scale insects and spider mites indoors or in greenhouses. Stagnant excess moisture can promote rot. Ventilate regularly and avoid wetting foliage in the evening.
Did you know?
Male fern was once used in traditional medicine as a powerful intestinal antiparasitic, though this practice is now outdated and dangerous. Its scaly rhizome, whose shape resembles a paw, inspired the Latin name "filix-mas" (literally "male fern"), in contrast to other more delicate species. It remains one of the most cultivated ferns in European shade gardens, precisely for its legendary reliability.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
