The broad buckler-fern is one of Europe's oldest ferns, with fossils testifying to its presence since the Tertiary period. Its tripinnate fronds, extremely finely cut, inspired Victorian ornamental patterns, notably in embroidery and interior decoration. In traditional herbal medicine, some ferns of the Dryopteris genus were used against intestinal parasites, though this practice is now discouraged without medical expertise.
