Care

Watering

Water regularly during the growing season (spring-summer), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Use room-temperature water, preferably not hard water, and always avoid letting water stagnate at the bottom of the pot.

Light and Location

Place your Candelabra Tree in a very bright spot, ideally near a window with indirect light. It tolerates partial shade but will become leggy in low light. Avoid cold drafts and prolonged exposure to intense direct sun.

Pruning and Shaping

Prune lightly after flowering to encourage branching and a denser shape. Remove overly long or damaged stems, and strip yellowed leaves at the base. Pinch back the tips of young stems in spring to promote more compact growth.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced fertilizer (equivalent NPK ratio) every 2 weeks during the growing season (April to September). Always dilute according to product instructions and stop feeding in winter when the plant slows its development.

Soil and Repotting

Use a light, well-draining mix: universal potting soil + perlite or fine bark. Repot in spring every 2-3 years into a slightly larger pot. Always ensure the pot has effective drainage holes.

Pests and Common Problems

Watch for scale insects, spider mites, and aphids, especially in dry air. If infestation occurs, isolate the plant and treat with mild insecticidal soap. Widespread yellowing of leaves often indicates overwatering or insufficient light.

Did you know?

The Candelabra Tree owes its common name to its traditional use in Madagascar: its lightweight wood and resins made it ideal for making torches and candles. It is a plant deeply rooted in the craftsmanship and ancient practices of Madagascar and African regions.

Where to buy it

Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
