Care
Bright light exposure
This orchid prefers bright, indirect light, just as it naturally receives under the tree canopy. Avoid direct sun, which would scorch its delicate foliage. An east or west-facing window behind a sheer curtain works perfectly.
Appropriate watering
Water moderately in spring and summer, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, space out watering further. Preferably use rainwater or filtered water, as this orchid is sensitive to lime. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain ambient humidity.
Substrate and growing support
Use a substrate specific to epiphytic orchids: coarse pine bark, sphagnum, or aerated mix. This orchid appreciates supports that mimic its natural habitat (pieces of bark or aerated baskets). Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Measured fertilization
Apply orchid-specific fertilizer highly diluted (one quarter of the recommended dose) every 15 days in spring and summer. In autumn and winter, reduce or stop fertilizing. Epiphytic orchids have modest nutrient requirements.
Pruning and maintenance
Remove faded flowers or dried flower stems at the base to encourage new blooming. Damaged leaves can be gently removed. No drastic pruning needed: this orchid produces its branching naturally.
Prevention and health
Watch out for scale insects and spider mites, especially in dry indoor conditions. Good ventilation, moderate humidity, and regular misting reduce risks. If infestation occurs, isolate the plant and treat gently with diluted soapy water.

The name "emarginata" refers to its flowers with characteristic notched petals. This miniature orchid was long confused with other similar genera before botanists definitively isolated it in the 1960s.

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
