Care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist during growth and flowering, especially in spring. Once flowering is finished and foliage has faded, gradually reduce watering. During dormancy (summer-fall), let the soil dry out slightly more.
Light exposure
Prefer partial to full shade, as in woodland settings. This plant appreciates filtered light and suffers if exposed to direct sun in summer. A location on the east or north side of your garden is ideal.
Soil and planting
Require soil rich in organic matter, humus-based and well-drained to prevent rhizome rot. Incorporate compost or decomposed fallen leaves before planting. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is preferred.
Pruning and maintenance
No pruning is necessary. Simply let the foliage yellow and fade naturally before removing it, so the plant can rebuild its reserves. Clean up dead leaves in autumn.
Fertilizing
A light application of organic fertilizer in spring (before flowering) is sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
Diseases and pests
This plant is generally robust and rarely subject to pests. Excess moisture or poor drainage can cause rhizome rot. Ensure good air circulation and avoid standing water accumulation.
Did you know?
The flowers shaped like little « white shorts » or « white bleeding hearts » inspired its whimsical nickname « Dutchman's breeches ». In reality, this North American plant has no connection to the Netherlands: the name simply evokes the amusing and unusual appearance of its floral form. Its rhizomes contain alkaloids and the plant was traditionally used by Native American peoples.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
