Exposure

Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, deutzia tolerates relative drought well. Keep the soil moist without excess during growth and flowering periods.

Deutzia owes its botanical name to Dutch botanist Johan van der Deutz, a wealthy 18th-century patron of science. This Asian shrub, introduced to Europe in the 19th century, became famous for its clusters of small white or pale pink delicately fragrant flowers, which evoke delicate spring lace and explain its English nickname: 'pride of Rochester'.

Best planted in autumn so the roots settle in before summer, or in early spring once the frost has passed. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, October, November.
