Care
Light
Claytonia virginica prefers part-shade locations, ideally under deciduous trees that provide light in winter and shade in summer. It tolerates partial shade but flowers best with sufficient indirect light.
Soil
This plant appreciates humus-rich, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Adding organic matter (fallen leaves, compost) at planting improves establishment and maintains soil moisture.
Watering
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the spring growing period. After flowering and summer dormancy sets in, reduce watering significantly. In autumn and winter, occasional watering is sufficient.
Fertilizer
Apply moderate potassium-rich fertilizer in early spring to support flowering. Avoid excess nitrogen, which would favor foliage at the expense of flowers. Well-decomposed compost is generally sufficient.

Claytonia is generally very resistant. In overly wet and poorly drained soil, root rot may appear. Good drainage and soil aeration are sufficient to prevent these problems.

Claytonia virginica owes its name to English botanist John Clayton, renowned for his explorations in Virginia in the 18th century. This delicate northern herbaceous plant served as a traditional dye plant for indigenous populations of eastern America, and remains a precious harbinger of spring in woodland gardens.

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
