Care

Light Exposure

Place your cornflower in full sun for optimal flowering and intensely colored blooms. It tolerates partial shade but will produce fewer flowers. Avoid permanent shade.

Watering

Water regularly during growth and flowering, especially during dry periods. Once established, the plant tolerates dry spells well. Don't let the soil become waterlogged.

Soil and Preparation

Prepare well-drained, light, and undemanding soil. The cornflower accepts poor and even chalky soils. A compost addition at planting time is sufficient.

Pruning and Cutting

Remove spent flowers regularly to extend blooming. In late autumn, cut the plant down to ground level. You can also harvest flowers for fresh bouquets.

Fertilizing

A moderate application of balanced fertilizer at the start of the season is enough. The cornflower isn't greedy and prefers soil naturally rich in organic matter.

Health and Pests

Generally robust and not prone to diseases. Watch for powdery mildew if there's stagnant humidity. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid excess water to prevent fungal issues.

Did you know?

The cornflower has long been an emblem of wild life in European grain fields. Once very common, it nearly disappeared with agricultural intensification, before experiencing a renaissance thanks to wildflower garden enthusiasts and conservation initiatives.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
