Care
Watering
Water regularly during summer growth, then reduce in autumn and winter. Once established, this ornamental grass tolerates drought well and fears excess water more than scarcity. In containers, let the substrate dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
Light exposure
Place this grass in full sun to optimize its growth and the intensity of its pink to red colorations. It also tolerates partial shade, but will be less floriferous and more compact. Protect it from strong winds that could break its graceful stems.
Pruning and cleanup
Cut back to ground level in late winter or early spring, before vegetation resumes. You can also remove faded spikes throughout autumn to encourage prolonged flowering. Cut gently to avoid damaging the basal shoots.
Fertilizing
A balanced fertilizer application in spring is generally sufficient. This grass comes from poor environments and doesn't require intensive feeding. In containers, a light application in early summer can support flowering without excess.
Soil and drainage
Choose well-drained substrate: light garden soil mixed with sand or gravel. In very humid regions, elevate plantings or grow in containers. Adding organic matter is unnecessary; poor soil is enough.
Diseases and pests
Generally very resistant. In excessively humid conditions, watch for root rot and fungal issues: prioritize drainage and air circulation. True pests are rare; simply check for spider mites in very dry conditions.
Did you know?
Cenchrus setaceus has become a problematic invasive in the Mediterranean and certain desert regions, where its ability to colonize arid soils makes it difficult to control. Despite its ornamental beauty, it appears on black lists in several countries—a reminder that the most graceful plants can become a real ecological scourge outside their original context.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
