Care

Regular and abundant watering

Aquatic catabrosa is a plant of wetland zones that appreciates constantly wet or flooded soil. Maintain regular water supply, ideally by growing it at the edge of a pond, marsh, or in waterlogged soil. It tolerates drought poorly and will wilt quickly if the soil dries out.

Sunny to partially shaded exposure

This grass thrives in full sun to partial shade, where it develops dense foliage and more generous flowering. It can tolerate light shade, but prefers bright areas for optimal growth.

Moist and organic soils

Aquatic catabrosa requires richly organic, peaty or silty soils that remain constantly moist. It adapts particularly well to banks, ditches, reed beds and marshy areas. The addition of organic matter (compost, peat) promotes its establishment.

Cutting in late winter or early spring

Cut back dry and dead foliage at the end of winter, before new growth, to about 10-15 cm from the ground. This grass generally manages itself well and doesn't require frequent intervention. Old foliage can be removed manually in spring.

Few health problems

Aquatic catabrosa is not very susceptible to pests and diseases when grown in its ideal conditions (very moist soil). Prolonged waterlogging without aeration can promote rotting; ensure a well-oxygenated environment in marshy areas.

Fertilizer rarely necessary

In natural conditions or in soil rich in organic matter, this grass generally requires no fertilizer input. An annual application of balanced fertilizer in spring can be beneficial in poor soil, but remains optional.

Did you know?

Aquatic catabrosa is a boreal and temperate species, rare in France, often relictual in peatbogs and ancient wetlands. Its scientific name "Catabrosa" literally means "that eats easily", referring to its tender texture and palatability for livestock. It plays an important ecological role as a bank stabilizer and food source for waterfowl and aquatic herbivores.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
