Care
Watering
Dioecious sedge requires constantly moist to wet soil. Maintain high humidity levels, especially during spring and summer growth periods. In pots, water regularly without allowing stagnant water; in moist ground, it's generally self-sufficient.
Light exposure
Place it in full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. It tolerates partial shade well but develops more vigorously with at least a few hours of direct daily light.
Soil
Choose an acidic substrate rich in organic matter and constantly moist. Peatlands, riverbanks and marshy areas are its natural habitats. Improve pot drainage with peaty or fibrous compost.
Pruning and cleaning
No strict pruning necessary. Simply remove dead or damaged leaves in spring to encourage new foliage growth. This keeps the plant neat and airy-looking.
Fertilizer
Dioecious sedge requires minimal mineral input. A balanced diluted fertilizer applied once or twice in spring is sufficient. Avoid excess nitrogen which would promote excessive foliage at the expense of structure.
Diseases and pests
Under proper humidity and aeration conditions, it remains very healthy. Stagnant excess moisture can promote root rot. Inspect regularly for scale insects or aphids, which are rare but possible indoors.
Did you know?
Dioecious sedge gets its name from its particular biology: male and female plants are separate (dioecy). This remarkable reproductive strategy, uncommon among Cyperaceae, has fascinated botanists since the 18th century. It's naturally found in Northern European peatlands, where it plays a key ecological role in stabilizing and enriching substrates poor in mineral elements.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
