Care
Watering
Rounded sedge appreciates constantly moist to wet soils. In pots, keep the substrate moist without excessive waterlogging. In the garden, it thrives naturally in humid environments like marshes or streambanks.
Light exposure
Place it in full sun or partial shade, ideally with 4 to 6 hours of direct light. It tolerates partial shade well and can even thrive there, but good light exposure promotes a more compact habit and better vigor.
Soil
Choose moist, acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter (peat, potting soil). Sedge appreciates poorly draining soils, unlike most plants. Improve the substrate with compost or coconut fiber to maintain moisture.
Pruning
Lightly cut back dead or damaged foliage in early spring before growth resumes. No formal pruning is necessary. You can remove faded flower spikes to encourage better branching and a more airy habit.
Fertilizer
Fertilizing is generally unnecessary if the soil is rich. In pots, apply balanced diluted fertilizer in spring and early summer. Prefer organic amendments (compost, plant extracts) to synthetic fertilizers to respect the natural character of this wetland plant.
Diseases and pests
Rounded sedge is generally robust and rarely affected by diseases. Persistent excess moisture combined with poor air circulation can promote root rot or fungal issues. Ensure good air circulation and avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Did you know?
Carex species are among the most diverse plants in temperate and humid zones: over 2,000 species exist worldwide. Rounded sedge, small but robust, plays a crucial ecological role in stabilizing banks and marshy soils, while its delicate inflorescences feed many pollinating insects in spring.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
