Care
Watering
Carex appressa appreciates moist to even waterlogged soil. Water regularly to keep the substrate fresh, especially during the spring-summer growing period. In winter, reduce watering but don't let the soil dry out completely. This species tolerates wet areas and streamside gardens very well.
Light exposure
Plant this grass in full sun or partial shade. It adapts to shaded positions but develops better colour and a more compact form in sunlight. Prefer a location sheltered from strong winds that could damage its fine foliage.
Soil and substrate
Rich, organic soil that drains well but retains moisture is ideal. Carex appressa tolerates heavy and slightly acidic soils. Enrich the soil with compost or peat before planting to encourage establishment.
Pruning and maintenance
Prune dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring. You can cut back the clump to 10–15 cm high before growth resumes. Remove yellowing leaves throughout the season to keep it looking its best.
Fertiliser
A moderate application of balanced fertiliser in spring is sufficient. Carex appressa doesn't require intensive feeding. Annual organic mulching naturally enriches the soil with organic matter.
Diseases and pests
This species is generally robust and rarely troubled by disease. Stagnant excess moisture can promote root rot: ensure good drainage. Watch for rust in very humid conditions and remove affected parts.
Did you know?
Carex appressa, known as 'Drooping Sedge' in Australia, is an excellent stabiliser for banks and wet areas. Its dense root system holds slippery soils and prevents erosion, making it a valuable ally in ecological restoration and natural swimming pond gardens.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
