Care
Watering
Carex alba prefers moist but well-drained soil, without excess moisture. Water moderately when planting, then let natural rainfall do the job in general. During prolonged dry spells, occasional watering will keep the plant vigorous.
Light exposure
This sedge enjoys full sun to partial shade. It tolerates light shade well, but displays its compact form and elegant foliage best in sunlight. Avoid heavily shaded areas that would slow its growth.
Pruning and maintenance
Carex alba requires little pruning. In late winter or early spring, cut back old or damaged foliage to a few centimeters above ground to encourage new leaf emergence. Remove any dead growth in the center of clumps if they appear.
Soil
Choose well-drained soil, preferably chalky or neutral. Carex alba dislikes overly clayey or waterlogged soils. Incorporate sand or gravel when planting if your soil retains too much water.
Fertilizer
Carex alba has modest nutrient needs. A light application of compost in spring is generally sufficient. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers that would encourage soft growth at the expense of compact structure.
Diseases and pests
Very resistant, Carex alba is rarely subject to disease if drainage is adequate. Excessive moisture can promote root rot or fungal issues. Ensure good air circulation and well-drained soil.
Did you know?
Carex alba, the white sedge, gets its Latin name from the silvery sheen of its flower spikes during blooming. This plant is highly valued in mountain gardens and alpine rock gardens, where it grows naturally on exposed chalky soils; it has become essential in contemporary compositions for its airy form and light effect throughout the year.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
