Care
Sunlight
Bromus madritensis appreciates a sunny exposure for optimal development. In warm climates, light afternoon shade can be beneficial. Avoid overly shaded areas that would slow its growth.
Watering
This is a relatively drought-tolerant grass once established. Water regularly at the young stage to promote root development. In arid climates, keep the soil slightly moist during active growth periods, then reduce watering after flowering.
Soil and Planting
Prefer well-draining soil, as stagnant moisture promotes root rot. This grass tolerates poor, rocky or sandy soils. A light compost application at planting is generally sufficient.
Pruning and Cutting
Cut back the clump in late winter or early spring before new growth, to 5-10 cm from the ground. You can also leave the flower heads in place for their ornamental interest, then remove dead foliage at the end of the season.
Fertilizer
No fertilizer is generally necessary. In very poor soil, a light application of balanced fertilizer in spring can support growth, but this grass does well with minimal nutrition.
Pests and Diseases
Bromus madritensis is quite robust. In overly humid conditions, watch for fungi such as rust. Pest attacks remain rare. Ensure good air circulation and avoid foliar watering to limit fungal risks.
Did you know?
Bromus madritensis takes its name from Madrid, although its native range extends mainly throughout the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. This grass is a pioneer in colonizing degraded and arid soils, playing an important ecological role in stabilizing rocky lands before the arrival of other plant species.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
