Care

Light exposure

Wood false brome thrives in partial shade or dappled shade, which mirrors its natural woodland habitat. It also tolerates full sun in cooler regions, but prefers to avoid excessive afternoon heat. An east-facing or west-facing exposure works particularly well.

Watering

Once established, this hardy grass requires little watering and tolerates dry periods well. During the establishment phase (first few months), keep the soil lightly moist. Avoid excess water, which would encourage root rot.

Soil preparation

Prepare well-drained soil, preferably neutral to chalky. Enrich with compost at planting time. This species appreciates light, well-structured soils, but adapts to various soil types as long as they are not compacted or waterlogged.

Pruning and maintenance

Prune the clump in late winter or early spring before new growth, cutting back to 5-10 cm from the ground. Remove dead or dried leaves throughout the season. This operation rejuvenates the plant and promotes better density.

Fertilization

No fertilizer is generally necessary in reasonably fertile soil. In very poor conditions, a light application of compost in early spring is sufficient. Avoid excess nitrogen, which weakens hardiness.

Diseases and pests

Wood false brome is very resistant to common diseases and pests. Good drainage prevents most fungal problems. No specific treatment is usually required if growing conditions are respected.

Did you know?

Wood false brome is a discreet but ecologically important grass of European woodlands, where it plays a primary role in stabilizing forest soils and providing cover for small animals. Its scientific name literally means "short-jointed of the forests," referring to the characteristic structure of its spikelets that form very recognizable compact chains at flowering time.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
