Care
Exposure
Install this ornamental grass in full sun for optimal growth and more pronounced foliage color. It tolerates partial shade but will be less dense and less floriferous. Avoid full shade, which weakens the plant.
Watering
Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system, then the plant gradually becomes drought-tolerant. In summer, weekly watering is sufficient. Reduce watering in winter.
Soil and drainage
Brachypodium phoenicoides prefers well-drained, light, and even calcareous soils. Improve heavy or clayey soils by incorporating coarse sand or gravel before planting. Overly compacted or wet soil promotes root rot.
Pruning and cleanup
Cut back the grass to 10–15 cm above ground level in late winter (February-March), before growth resumes. Regularly remove dead or damaged foliage to maintain a clean and airy appearance.
Fertilization
A balanced fertilizer application in spring is more than enough to support growth. Naturally rich soils require no supplementation. Avoid excess nitrogen, which weakens the culms.
Diseases and pests
This ornamental grass is generally little affected by diseases. Good drainage and adequate air circulation prevent fungal problems. Occasionally check for spider mites in very hot and dry climates.
Did you know?
Brachypodium phoenicoides is a pioneer grass of the Mediterranean basin, often characteristic of garrigue and arid soils. Its name 'phoenicoides' refers to its Mediterranean origins, and it plays an important ecological role in stabilizing light soils and providing shelter for pollinating insects in early summer.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
