Care
Watering
Watercress is an aquatic or semi-aquatic plant that thrives in constantly moist soil, even partially submerged. Keep the substrate saturated with water, especially during the summer months. It tolerates dry periods poorly and prefers environments near shorelines or in marshy zones.
Exposure
Plant watercress in part shade or full sun for optimal growth. It accepts semi-shaded locations near water features. Sun exposure strengthens its foliage development and flowering.
Soil and substrate
This species requires soil rich in organic matter, permanently very moist or humid, and slightly acidic to neutral. It establishes ideally in marshes, ditches, floodplain meadows, or pond edges. Improve the soil with decomposed compost or peaty potting mix.
Pruning and cutting
Pruning is not essential. You can cut back watercress after flowering to encourage foliage regeneration the following spring. Remove dead or damaged parts in late winter.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is generally unnecessary if the soil is rich in organic matter. In very poor soil, a balanced organic fertilizer applied in spring can support growth.
Diseases and pests
Watercress is rarely affected by diseases when grown in its ideal environment (consistent moisture). Dried-out soil promotes pathogen development. Watch for possible aphid presence if exposed to overly dry conditions; proper watering is usually sufficient to keep them at bay.
Did you know?
Watercress is a plant traditionally used in European wetlands for its edible properties (crunchy leaves) and supposed medicinal virtues. Its Latin name 'erecta' refers to its upright posture, a characteristic that distinguishes it from other more sprawling aquatic species. In aquatic ecology, it plays an important role in stabilizing banks and filtering marshy environments.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
