Care
Regular watering
Celery demands constant and generous watering: the soil should never dry out between waterings. During hot periods, water every 2–3 days to maintain consistent moisture. Mulching at the base helps retain moisture and limits evaporation.
Sunny exposure
Plant celery in full sun (minimum 6 to 8 hours) to encourage growth and foliage development. Partial shade also works well in very hot climates. Avoid areas exposed to strong winds.
Rich and moist soil
Work the soil deeply before planting and incorporate well-decomposed compost or manure. Celery prefers slightly alkaline to neutral soils. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot despite its moisture requirements.
Moderate fertilizing
Apply balanced fertilizer 3 to 4 weeks after planting. For continuous growth, a monthly application of low-nitrogen fertilizer is sufficient. Avoid excess feeding, which would promote excessive foliage at the expense of quality.
Cutting and harvesting
Pinch outer stems when they reach a harvestable size to encourage production. Harvest stems progressively by cutting them at the base or pick individual leaves. Regular harvesting stimulates branching.
Disease prevention
Celery can suffer from bacterial rot if too wet. Ensure good drainage and proper air circulation. Watch for aphids or whiteflies; early spraying with soapy water or neem oil controls these pests.
Did you know?
Celery was once considered a magical and medicinal plant in ancient Egypt, where it was used in funeral rituals. The Romans made it into a victory crown for warriors, while in medieval Europe it was credited with aphrodisiac properties that made it highly coveted among the nobility.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
