Care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season, especially during dry spells. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy. A mulch layer helps retain soil moisture.
Light Exposure
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Partial shade works particularly well in very hot regions. At least 4 to 5 hours of direct light promotes beautiful flowering.
Soil Preparation
Enrich the soil with well-decomposed compost before spring planting. Slightly acidic to neutral soil, rich in organic matter and well-drained, is ideal. Plant tubers 2 to 3 inches deep.
Fertilizing
An application of balanced fertilizer (equal NPK) at the start of spring growth is generally sufficient. Avoid excess nitrogen, which could promote foliage at the expense of flowers and tubers.
Pruning and Cleanup
Remove dead stems in late fall or early winter. No actual pruning is necessary. Let the foliage die back naturally so the tubers can accumulate reserves.
Preventing Problems
This plant is globally hardy and little prone to diseases. Excess moisture can promote tuber rot: ensure good drainage. Occasionally inspect for uncommon insect pests.
Did you know?
The groundnut was a major food crop for Indigenous peoples of North America, who cultivated these starchy and flavorful tubers for millennia. European explorers discovered them and, fascinated by their sweet taste and productivity, attempted to introduce them to Europe without great commercial success. Today, this plant is being rediscovered by curious gardeners and botanical heritage enthusiasts, but it remains little commercialized in conventional horticulture.
Where to buy it
Plant the bulbs in autumn for spring flowering. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from September to November.
