Care

Watering

Keep the soil moist during the growing season (spring-summer) without creating waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter, allowing it to dry out slightly between waterings. Alpinia appreciates a humid atmosphere: mist the foliage regularly if the air is dry.

Light exposure

Place your plant in partial shade or under bright indirect light. It tolerates shade but flowers better with good lighting. Protect it from intense direct afternoon sun, especially in very hot climates.

Soil and potting mix

Choose a well-draining substrate rich in organic matter (peat-based potting soil, peat, pine bark). Alpinia prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH and fears root asphyxiation. Improve drainage in pots with a layer of clay pellets.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced or slightly nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 15 to 20 days during the growing season (April-September). Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter. Adding well-decomposed compost in spring also promotes vigor.

Pruning and cleaning

Remove yellow or damaged leaves as needed. You can thin out dense stems in spring to promote air circulation and branching. Prune after flowering if you need to control the plant's size.

Problems and pests

Watch for mealybugs and red spider mites in dry conditions: increase humidity and treat if necessary. Root rot appears with excess water: improve drainage and reduce watering. Good air circulation prevents fungal diseases.

Did you know?

Alpinia zerumbet is called 'shell ginger' or 'shell flower' in reference to its delicate white-pink flowers that emerge from bracts resembling small shells. In Southeast Asia, its rhizomes have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and its penetrating fragrance has made it a highly prized ornamental plant in tropical gardens since the 18th century.

Where to buy it

Plant in spring or early autumn, avoiding spells of intense heat. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: March, April, May, September.
