Expert tips
The key tip
Maximum sun, very well-drained and dry soil after establishment—very little regular watering once rooted. Mulch with gravel or sand: this mimics the desert and prevents rot.
The common mistake
Regular watering or winter watering: agave rots at the base and slowly declines from the center.
The pro's trick
Keep it almost dry from November to March: summer growth will be much more vigorous.
Care
Watering
Water moderately during the growing period (spring-summer), allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, significantly reduce watering, or even stop it if temperatures drop. This succulent tolerates drought well and fears excess moisture.
Light Exposure
Place your Agave ocahui in full sun, ideally 6 to 8 hours per day. Intense bright exposure promotes compact growth and beautiful coloring. Indoors, a south-facing window is recommended.
Soil and Substrate
Use a very well-draining mix made of cacti soil, coarse sand, and pumice or gravel. Poor drainage quickly leads to root rot. A perforated pot is essential.
Pruning and Trimming
No pruning is necessary. You can remove dried or damaged leaves at the base for hygiene purposes. Be careful of the spines during any handling.
Fertilizing
Apply low-nitrogen fertilizer (rich in potassium) once or twice during the growing period (May to September). Succulents do not need heavy fertilization. Excess fertilizer stimulates weak growth and weakens the plant.
Diseases and Pests
Watch for mealybugs and spider mites in dry conditions. The main threat remains root rot, caused by excessive watering or poor drainage. Ventilate regularly and maintain good pot hygiene.
Did you know?
Agave ocahui, known locally as "agave mescal," was used by indigenous peoples of Sonora to produce a traditional fermented beverage. Once considered a natural remedy, this medium-sized agave remains less well-known than its giant cousins, but offers relative hardiness to the Mexican desert climate.
Where to buy it
Plant in spring, once all risk of frost has gone. Pick a plant with healthy foliage and roots that are not exposed. Best time: from April to June.
